Step by Step Guide to Speed Up Your Windows 7′s Shutdown Time

If shutting down your PC seems to take forever to finish, then you might want to tweak your computer registry to reduce the waiting time. Here’s a step by step guide to speed-up your shut down time:

First, click on your windows start button and type “regedit.exe” in the search box of the start menu and hit Enter.

The Registry Editor screen will appear and on the left panel of the screen, navigate your way through the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control

On the right panel, you will see the “WaitToKillServiceTimeout” item. Double click on it and an edit string box will appear. By default the value data set for your PC is 12000 (which is 12 seconds of waiting time). To reduce the waiting time, just enter any number lower than 12000, say 5000 (which is 5 seconds) and then hit OK.

That’s all it takes to reduce the shutting down time. Before it can take effect though, you will need to restart your PC and the next time you shut it down, you will notice a shorter waiting time.
