After you have made the upgrade of your operating system from Windows Vista to Windows 7, you will never fail to notice that your Windows Live Messenger will always appear or rather stick to the windows taskbar. Now, your messenger contact, display picture, and also your conversation windows have their own full-sized taskbar buttons.
This change of Windows Live Messenger on Windows 7 may be a bit intrusive for some people as the messenger used to be minimized to the system tray instead of staying at the windows taskbar.
Therefore, in order to revert back the change to the one we are familiar with in Windows Vista, you will have to make a little tweak with the setting of your MSN Messenger.
1. First, exit your Windows Live Messenger
2. Locate your messenger icon in the Start Menu and right click the icon
3. Select Properties

4. Click on the ‘Compatibility’ tab and tick the check box for ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:’ under the compatibility mode area.
5. In the drop-down list, select Windows Vista
6. Click on Apply
After you have made the changes above, your Windows Live Messenger will minimize to the system tray when you close it. Go ahead and try.

Thanks! I had been trying to figure out how to do this!
